We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect birthday party for our little Maddie. Our baby is two! How did this happen so quickly!?
I am super excited to say the party was a HUGE success! All the hard work and planning was all worth it seeing Maddie and her friends having a ball. I promised to put together a post to share her special day with you all as if you were just there… so here it is! I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together…
VENUE | MY LITTLE PICASSO
Fortunately we were invited in December by Cornubia Mall in Mount Edgecombe to pop into My Little Picasso, a kiddies art studio that has taken occupancy at the centre. Maddie absolutely loved her visit (which I blogged about here in case you want to give it a read) and on leaving the studio Brett and I both knew it would be the perfect place to host Maddie’s second birthday!
Maddie loves art! She loves to paint, play with play dough and jump around on soft play and this is exactly what My Little Picasso offers! A place for her to get messy, explore her creative side and have loads of fun!
With a host of birthday party packages ranging from a 10 children package at R1600 which includes two hours of fun inclusive of the venue, take home A4 boxed canvases which make really beautiful keepsakes, an apron, unlimited paint usage and a party pack to the option of adding sand art to the package at R1800 for 10 children.
Signing up to have Maddie’s birthday party at My Little Picasso ensured me that it would be a fun, creative and unique birthday experience for all the kiddies and their parents we invited as well as for our Maddie!
I decided to run with the ‘art party’ idea and themed the entire birthday party around art. Luckily the venue spoke for itself and the bright colourful walls and paint splattered floors added to the theme!
With each kid having their own easel set up with a chair and table with a palate of paint, brushes and water to wash off their brushes with their A4 boxed canvas ready and waiting for the kiddies to add their splash of colour to it. It was an easy theme to run with at the perfect location…
STATIONERY | THE ARTY PARTY
Luckily the theme allowed me to explore bright colours of the rainbow so I was able to bring in colourful paper pop out fans, colourful table clothes and cutlery. Kerryn from The Arty Party, who custom designs bespoke party stationery to the highest standard, helped me put together the personal touches to party. Entrusting her with my vision was super easy as she can basically design anything which can be printed onto paper, card, sticker, vinyl, correx, etc – the list is actually endless! I literally sent her a couple of images of inspiration I found on Pinterest and online and she sent me a PDF of what she can put together within a day or two of our first communication.
Kerry made the paint splattered bunting with Maddison’s name, the colourful tassel garland we used along the front of the table, the cupcake toppers, the signage for our ‘creative juices’ station as well the sticker labels I used for my gift bags which were used for the kiddies to take home their paintings in and wrap around paint tin stickers for my tins which were apart of my party favours.
Working with her was an absolute ease and she honestly gave Maddie’s party the perfect personalised touch! It is no wonder she comes highly recommended – I have heard her name suggested by a couple of friends who have used her and I can safely say – I was blown away! She comes highly recommended!
ENTERTAINMENT | FINDERS KEEPERS
We were fortunate enough to be contacted by the lovely Jen at Kiki&Boo‘s #FindersKeepers parties to set up an awesome sand pit for Maddie to add to the parties entertainment. Jen set up two standing sand pits with all the digging equipment including spades, buckets, sieves and rake. Inside the sand pits were colourful gems which the children then look for and they get to keep. Jen incorporated treasures catered to our theme which were so special – it was a HUGE hit for the kids at the party! After the party was over – Jen came back, broke down the set up and cleaned up the mess the kids had made. Amazing!
THE CAKE | ROXI WARDMAN
If you are a HUGE MasterChef fan like we are, the name Roxi Wardman will definitely ring a bell with you! The MasterChef South Africa 2014 winner was given the task of creating Maddie an art party cake to WOW and boy did Roxi knock it out of the park! I am no baker in any shape or form but I believe perfecting a rainbow cake is incredibly difficult and Roxi pulled it off incredibly well! Maddie’s six layer rainbow cake beautifully iced in white icing with rainbow ‘paint drips’ alongside the sides decked out with a fondant tube of paint, a paintbrush and colour palate was out of this world! The best part is it tasted as good as it looked and all of our guests made comments about how airy the sponge was and how deliciously (not too sweet) the frosty icing was!
THE ICED BISCUITS | BAKE FOR ME
Newbie on the baking block, Lisa at Bake for Me in Morningside created the most beautiful decorated iced biscuits for Maddie. The cute art palate biscuits were absolute perfection and the round colourful iced biscuits with sprinkles were a huge hit with the kiddies at the party!
THE PARTY FAVOURS:
Even though My Little Picasso supplies plastic aprons for the kids, I decided to do something special for our party guests which were also apart of the party favours and had kiddie sized personalised aprons made for Maddie’s friends. Pink for the girls and blue for the boys… each apron had their name embroidered onto the front and just seeing the kids all painting with their aprons was such the sweetest little reward for me!
Each child then took home a ‘paint tin’ filled with art supplies including a palate of water colours, play dough and a crayon along with a snack to keep on hand incase their sweet tooth kicked in.
THE OUTFIT | LIVEPRINT
I found this colourful rainbow skirt from an online children’s boutique online and asked our friends at LivePRINT in Ballito to print on a onesie for Maddie and I found the clip at Lovisa. Maddie looked beautifully dressed to theme!
The party all that I hoped for and more! The staff at My Little Picasso were amazing and helped so beautifully with set up and break down, they were attentive to the kids while they painted, helped decorate their artworks with glitter and blowed dried them dry before packing them into their gift bags to take home. It was truly easy an easy party to pull off with their help and all 16 kids left with big smiles on their faces and nearly all the moms vowed to pop back into the studio at another time to bring back their kids for an art session!
Thank you to all the service providers who made this possible and my friend Steph Stein for capturing the day so beautifully for my family and I!

I cannot recall. I think I found them on Gumtree. I’ve seen them on Wish for less than R50 if you’re willing to wait a couple of months for it x
