TRAVEL: Champagne Haven

This past weekend we were invited to experience ‘a small piece of paradise’ and the invite honestly couldn’t have come at a more perfect time! T minus a week before we welcome our second born into the world!

The perfect opportunity to have a baby moon and enjoy quality one on one time with our first born before she has to share us with her sister.

Late Friday afternoon we packed our car and headed up to Champagne Haven – a homely chalet in the stunning Mount Champagne Resort in the Central Drakensberg. After a short and comfortable two and a half hour drive from Durban, we arrived at Chalet No.6 – a homely six sleeper, fully furnished in an African style with every amenity needed catered for to ensure a relaxing stay in the magnificent mountains.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a stove, fridge, microwave as well as a chest freezer. There is also a washing machine and tumble drier with a full washing line outside the cottage. There is even an iron and ironing board.

The free standing double story cottage has three bedrooms – a large upstairs main room with a double bed as well as two bedrooms downstairs each with two single beds. There are two bathrooms, one upstairs with a toilet and shower as well as one downstairs with a toilet and bath. The rooms have cupboards to unpack and make yourself comfortable for an extended stay.

The comfortable living room includes a six seater dining room table while the lounge includes a three seater and two two seater couches to enjoy the DSTV Hotel Bouquet on the TV. The cottage also complimentary wi-fi for those who may need to do some work while relaxing in paradise.

There is an outside built in braai area with a six seater table and chair set to further enjoy the breathtaking views of the rest of the resort as well as the mountains.

The chalets are fully serviced on a daily basis so it’s honestly the full holiday experience with a homely feel! No need to make beds, do the dishes etc – everything is taken care of!

As Champagne Haven is part of the beautiful Mount Champagne resort, you’re able to relax in a safe and secure environment where the kids can ride their bikes in the streets in what can best be described as a suburban neighbourhood feel.

You are also able to use all the facilities on the property which include; a pristine dam for fishing and canoeing, a swimming pool, trampoline, children’s playground, tennis court, horse-riding and zipline course.

There are also nearby scenic hikes to take advantage of the great views of the surrounding areas and a short drive away are some of the best tourist spots that Champagne Valley has to offer including:

Valley Bakery

A MUST when visiting Champagne Valley! This serene coffee shop is filled with delicious pastries, tarts and the most delicious cheese cake! Their menu includes quiches and salad, home made pies, open sandwiches and breakfast. They have an incredible play area for both small and bigger kids and you’re able to sit outside comfortably while your kids play within eye sight while you sip on their delicious cappuccinos. Before leaving you have to walk through the retail section of the bakery and take home some freshly baked croissants, biscuits and other delicious offerings they have on offer. It’s a family favourite of ours!

Waffle Hut

It was our first visit to The Waffle Hut this trip, a short 15 minute drive from Champagne Haven. This cosy little eatery offers delicious sweet and savoury waffles and pancakes. They also have a nice kids play area including a trampoline. We will definitely be back!

Chocolate Memories

Another MUST when in the valley! This quaint Chocolate Bar offers an incredibly affordable and utterly delicious chocolate dipping experience! A generous decadent chocolate fondue with an array of things to dip including; strawberries, banana, marshmallows, pretzels and biscuits is an affordable R130 and more than enough for four! The Cedarwood Village Centre also has a beautiful little shop called Farm Friends with a variety of quirky bits and bobs for the home, kids and fashion on offer. There is also a play area for the kids to play including a broken tractor, airplane and wobbly chairs.

All in all, a visit to Champagne Haven was an incredible family get away where we were comfortable, were able to relax, enjoy the serenity that is the Drakensberg while having a host of fun and entertaining things to do as a family and to keep Maddie busy both at the resort as well as within the area, as well as really nice food offerings within a few kilometres of the resort. We will most definitely be back to indulge in a week worth of relaxation at the cottage rather than a short weekend!
